Photovoltaic modules can successfully be used to generate electricity for a water heater
Today by good prices of photovoltaic modules the photovoltaic heating become very competitive versus them with solar thermal collectors as well because of many technical advantages.
Kon Tiki Solar presents an innovative solution on the front of the heating domestic water by solar energy. The solar controller KTR4 has a leading role for efficient conversion the photovoltaic to thermal energy.

Water Heating Controller
The controller KTR4 controls the water heating with electrical heater supplied from photovoltaic modules in a way, that current maximum power peak (MPPT) of the solar generator comes to the heater in the water tank.
Max. power of the photovoltaic modules 4000W
Max. open circuit voltage of solar modules 340V
Max. short circuit current of solar modules 16A

Characteristics and functions
Many photovoltaic modules in series are connected to DC input of the KTR4 controller.
The controller search momentary maximal PV power of the PV modules (MPPT), than converts DC voltage into alternating voltage for supplying the resistive heater in the water tank.
The controller has two power outputs:
- the output 1 is connected to the prior heater
- the output 2 is connected to the heater, which uses the redundant energy.
The controller has two measuring inputs. Each of the inputs is connected to the temperature sensor PT1000, which is built in the heating device.
Integrated temperature controller makes sure that the temperature in the heating device is not higher that the set maximum temperature.
What advantages has water heating via photovoltaic over solar thermal system?
2 kW solar modules generate as much as two 2m2 solar thermal collectors with, but with many advantages
- energy (ratio 4:1) as by flat solar thermal collectors (ratio 13:1), for latitude 45°-50°,
- simple installation with a cable instead of isolated pipes,
- no pipes, valves, pumps,
- no antifreeze fluid, no fluid leaking and boiling during your holidays,
- cannot overheat, cannot freeze
- solar modules are completely resistant to hail,
- lifespan of solar modules is more than 40 years, with almost no maintenance costs,
- no connection to electric grid is necessary
- greater distance between solar modules and water tank is possible.
- Use with existing immersion heater 230 volts in the tank
